Using the Korean General Social Survey(KGSS) 2006, this study examines whether political ideology and political knowledge are associated with the level and variance of support for government responsibility for social welfare in following six areas: health care, elderly income security, unemployed income support, reducing income inequality, job creation, and housing. Results show that Koreans respond that government should be highly responsible for social welfare with slight variation in the level of support in the six areas. The progressives support more positive roles for government in the provision of social welfare than do the conservatives. The progressives show more homogeneous recognition on social welfare than do the conservatives. In contrast, political knowledge show mixed results in terms both of the level and the variance of support for the government responsibility. Differences in the developmental stages of polices, trust for government capability, and political issues might be associated with the inconsistent results.
